The United States has stated that it does not intend to force Ukraine to accept territorial concessions in a possible peace agreement with Russia. The statement was made by the American Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, amid new diplomatic efforts to try to end the conflict in Eastern Europe.
According to Rubio, the American government is not working with the hypothesis of pressuring Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, to give up parts of the country’s territory. The position reinforces the discourse of support for Ukraine’s sovereignty adopted by Washington since the beginning of the war.
Currently, the recognition of Russian-occupied Ukrainian areas as Russian territory is the main point of impasse in negotiations. Kiev rejects any agreement involving this type of concession and defends the maintenance of its internationally recognized borders.
The secretary’s speech takes place while representatives from the United States and European countries participate in meetings in Miami. The objective of the meetings is to seek diplomatic advances and evaluate paths towards a possible peace agreement.
The talks began hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared that he intended to continue the military offensive against Ukraine. Russian signaling raised tension and lowered expectations of a quick outcome to the conflict.
The war, which began in 2022, is approaching four years without a definitive solution.
