Maradona fans hold a banner that says ”Justice for God” REUTERS/Agustin Marcarian One of Diego Maradona’s daughters, Gianinna, denounced this Tuesday (21), in the trial over the circumstances of her father’s death in 2020, a “total and horrible manipulation” of the family by the medical team that accompanied the Argentine football legend in the last weeks of his life. “The manipulation was total and horrible, I feel like an idiot,” said Gianinna, 36 years old. According to local newspaper Clarín, she pointed to three of the defendants tried in San Isidro, near Buenos Aires, for potentially fatal negligence: neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque, psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov and psychologist Carlos Díaz. “I trusted these three people and all they did was manipulate us and leave my son without a grandfather,” he said during the hearing. The player died at the age of 60 as a result of a cardiorespiratory crisis and pulmonary edema, alone in his bed in a rented residence, where he was recovering after an uncomplicated neurosurgery. In the statement, Gianinna said that Maradona’s intensive home hospitalization was a recommendation from Luque. “He explained that, if that didn’t work, there was another option, but that first we should try home hospitalization, which at that time was the best option. It wasn’t a decision made overnight. With the perspective I have today, listening to the recordings, I can’t imagine that they were planning anything different,” he said. Gianinna reported the last times she saw her father, on November 17th and 18th, a week before his death. According to her, psychologist Díaz asked that Maradona not receive visitors, so that he would not be “overwhelmed” and to “give him space”. At the end of the report, the player’s daughter told what the period was like after her father’s death. “They tried to blame me, even the other day, when I heard in the press that they were trying to blame me for not finding a doctor, and at every moment, when the audios came to light, there were so many people trying to shift the blame to us, to hold us responsible,” he said. “In addition to what we talked about, they had a whole strategy going on in parallel, and at that time I couldn’t understand how someone could be a bad person or think so quickly that they were doing everything wrong. They were scared,” Gianinna concluded. The first was annulled in May 2025, after it was revealed that judge Julieta Makintach participated in an unauthorized documentary about the case. The judge resigned from her position after a video surfaced showing her being interviewed by a camera crew in the courthouse hallways and in her office, violating court rules. The new trial has required both prosecutors and defense lawyers to reevaluate their strategies after the first trial showcased photographs, videos, audio recordings and forensic evidence. At the initial trial, prosecutors argued that medical professionals violated treatment protocols and that the home where Maradona was recovering from surgery resembled a “horror theater” where necessary care was not provided. The defense argued that his death was inevitable due to long-standing health problems. Maradona struggled for decades with cocaine and alcohol addiction. Accusations of negligence emerged in 2021 after prosecutors appointed a medical board to investigate Maradona’s death. The panel concluded that his medical team acted “inappropriately, deficiently and recklessly.” The defendants are: psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov; neurosurgeon Leopoldo Luque; psychologist Carlos Ángel Díaz; doctor Nancy Edith Forlini; nurse Ricardo Almirón; head nurse Mariano Ariel Perroni; doctor Pedro Pablo Di Spagna. If convicted, they could face prison sentences ranging from 8 to 25 years.
