The president of the United States, Donald Trump, invited the presidents of Argentina, Javier Milei, and Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to join the Peace Council. The body will oversee the technocratic government of the Gaza Strip.
Milei published the photo of the invitation on X this Saturday (17). “It is an honor for me to receive the invitation for Argentina to join, as a founding member, the Peace Council,” he stated.
“Argentina will always stand alongside countries that directly confront terrorism, defend life and property, and promote peace and freedom,” he added.
Turkish spokesman Burhanettin Duran announced that Erdogan did not comment on the invitation. Trump also invited Egyptian dictator Abdel Fatah Al-Sisi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. An Ottawa official said Carney intends to accept.
Trump will chair the council. The body is part of the second phase of the US peace plan for Gaza.
Gaza peace council will be chaired by Trump
In addition to Milei, the council will have Marco Rubio, American Secretary of State; Tony Blair, former British Prime Minister; Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Trump envoys; billionaire Marc Rowan; Ajay Banga, president of the World Bank; and Robert Gabriel, Trump advisor.
The Gaza peace council will have authority over the National Committee for the Government of Gaza (NCAG), led by Ali Shaath, former Transport Minister of the Palestinian Authority. Shaath will lead the reconstruction of the territory, devastated by two years of Israeli bombing.
Trump fulfills his promise made in February 2025, when he stated that the US would take over the government of Gaza. Now, Washington will have administrative and military control of the territory.
The US peace plan, presented in September 2025, received approval from Tel Aviv, Hamas and the UN Security Council in November. The text envisages sending Arab military force, disarmament of Hamas and the future creation of a Palestinian state.
Hamas makes the delivery of weapons conditional on recognition of the Palestinian state. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu says he will never allow this measure.
