Trump officially announced the beginning of the second phase of the Middle East truce plan.
The new stage has begun even though crucial elements of the first phase, including the complete end to the exchange of attacks between Israel and Hamas, have not yet been fulfilled.
The first phase was shaken by Israeli air strikes, which killed hundreds of people in Gaza, in addition to the failure to return the remains of an Israeli hostage and Israel’s delay in reopening the Gaza border crossing with Egypt.
Now, in the second phase, the United States and its mediation partners will need to face the challenge of disarming Hamas, which refuses to hand over its weapons, and sending an international peacekeeping force to Gaza.
