According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred on land near the city of Tecoanapawhich remains about 300 kilometers from Mexico City. The depth of the epicenter, according to the USGS, was 35 kilometers below the surfaceconsidered shallower and which, therefore, can cause the tremor to gain strength on land.
