It is #FAKE that the video of Venezuelans tearing down a statue of Hugo Chávez is after Maduro’s capture; scene is from 2024 Reproduction A video is circulating on social media of protesters tearing down a statue of Hugo Chávez (1954-2013), former president of Venezuela and political mentor of Nicolás Maduro, as if it were a celebration that took place after the capture of the dictator by United States Forces this Saturday (3). It’s #FAKE. fake seal g1 🛑 What’s the video like? The video went viral on X this Saturday (3), the date on which the United States carried out an attack in Caracas and captured Maduro. The posts lie when they say, in the descriptions, that the material is recent. See two examples of false descriptions: “Incredible scenes in Venezuela right now! And you have communists and leftists everywhere on social media crying”; and “Venezuelans in celebration: Maduro captured, Chavista regime overthrown!”. The video shows protesters trying to tear down a statue of Hugo Chávez and then celebrating as the monument falls to the ground. ⚠️ Why is this fake? Although the video is real — and not a production of artificial intelligence (AI), for example — the post is out of context. In reality, the images are from July 29, 2024, the day of the presidential elections, and show the moment when protesters toppled a statue of Chávez in the city of Calabozo. On the same day, four other statues in honor of the former president were torn down in the country. To find the origin of the video used out of context, Fato ou Fake used the InVID tool and fragmented the material into several frames (static images). Then, he selected one of these “photos” and did a reverse search on Google Lens. This research serves to verify what content had previously been reproduced by reliable sources – and in what context. The result identified that the same scene had been shared on July 29, 2024 on social media, with captions indicating the location of the recording. Furthermore, Fato ou Fake found the same video in a report by the British newspaper The Guardian, which covered the protests.
