The Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) requested, last Friday (9), the Court to include João Ricardo Mendes, former CEO of the Hurb travel agency, on Interpol’s red list of wanted people. The businessman has been on the run since Wednesday (7), after the court ordered his preventive detention for failing to comply with precautionary measures.
Lawyer Vicente Donnici, who defends the former CEO, stated that he will wait for the court’s decision to comment.
Mendes faces charges of embezzlement and theft of works of art. One day before his arrest, in a custody hearing, the Ceará Court of Justice had granted provisional release to the businessman, with the use of an electronic ankle bracelet.
The defense claims that the defendant did not fail to comply with the precautionary measures, as he did not remain outside of Rio for more than 30 days without informing the Judiciary, as determined by the decision.
