Rocío San Miguel – activist critical of Nicolás Maduro – and Rafael Tudares, son of the elected president of Venezuela, Edmundo González Urrutia -, were released this Thursday (8), in Venezuela, as part of the process of releasing political prisoners announced by the president of the Venezuelan Parliament, the chavista Jorge Rodríguez. The information was confirmed by human rights organizations and opponents on social media.
Rodríguez announced this Thursday, days after the US operation in Caracas that culminated in the capture of Maduro, that the Chavista regime decided to release “an important number” of Venezuelan citizens and foreigners who were imprisoned for political reasons. According to the parliamentarian, the measure was presented as a “gesture to seek peace” and coexistence in the country, and the procedures began to be carried out immediately after the public announcement.
Other names linked to the opposition were also released, including Freddy Superlano, Juan Pablo Guanipa, Enrique Márquez and Javier Tarazona. Organizations said on social media that the number of releases is considered high and the process could last for several days.
According to the human rights organization Foro Penal, at least 863 people remained imprisoned or under persecution for political reasons in Venezuela as of the beginning of this week.
The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that there are Spanish citizens among those released. According to the Foreign Ministry, the Spanish embassy in Caracas is monitoring the case and is prepared to provide consular assistance to those released, pending the release of official information with more details.
