More than half of Cuba’s territory is expected to suffer simultaneous blackouts this Sunday (21), especially during the hours of greatest demand, between late afternoon and evening, according to official estimates from the state-owned Cuban Electric Union (UNE). The projection indicates an impact on 57% of the country, highlighting the persistence of the energy crisis that is plaguing the communist island.
According to the report released by UNE, the national electrical system operates with a deficit in generation capacity, which led to power cuts throughout this Saturday (20). The company reported that the scenario forecast for this Sunday is similar, with no expectation of normalization in the short term.
According to data from the state-owned company, since the beginning of the week blackouts have reached up to 58% of Cuban territory, with interruptions lasting more than 20 hours a day in several regions of the island. Cuts have become frequent since mid-2024 and affect both large cities and inland areas.
According to Cuba’s communist regime, the crisis is mainly the result of recurring failures in thermoelectric plants, many of which have been in continuous operation for decades, in addition to the lack of financial resources to import the fuel needed to generate electricity.
