The Venezuelan naval ship Capana (ARV T-61) got stuck near the coastal town Cumarebo in the state Falconafter taking part in military exercises near Margarita Island.

According to the Venezuelan opposition channel EVTV the incident took place on the Caribbean coast and part of the ship’s hull is under water. Videos circulating on social media show the water level has reached the mark on the hull — a clear sign of serious flooding on board.

There is no official confirmation yet about any injuries or casualties among the crew. It has also not been announced whether rescue or repair teams have already been deployed to help refloat the ship.

Recently modernized ship

Of Capana is a landing ship of the LST (Landing Ship Tank)class, designed for the transport of troops, vehicles and military equipment, with the possibility of landing directly on beaches without port facilities.

The ship was built in South Korea and in 1984 put into use by the Venezuelan Navy. It’s approx 100 meter long, has a water displacement of approx 4.000 ton and can transport up to 100 soldiers.

In 2023 the ship underwent a complete modernization carried out by the state shipyard DIANCA in collaboration with the technical services of UCOCAR. The upgrade included the hull, engines, navigation systems, armament and crew quarters — a project that cost more than three and a half years lasted.

Military context

Recently, the Capana took part in naval exercises near Margarita Island, aimed at defending the coast against simulated foreign interventions. The incident comes amid an increase in Venezuelan military activities in the region, aimed at showcasing the country’s amphibious and logistical capabilities.
