Construction of Sogei began on March 28, 2023. This submarine adopts a propulsion system based on lithium-ion batteries, replacing the existing air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. This extended the submergence time, reduced noise, and made maintenance easier.

The standard displacement is about 3,000 tons and the length is 84 meters, and it can reach a speed of up to 18 knots when submerged and 13 knots when on the water. The main armament is six 533mm torpedo launch tubes, and it can operate Type 18 torpedoes and Harpoon anti-ship missiles.

In March 2025, the Maritime Self-Defense Force will already launch the fourth submarine of the same class. JS Raigeiwas commissioned and is currently deployed at Kure Base. Unlike the initial model, Raigei is equipped with an upgraded Kawasaki 12V2531 diesel engine and Oki Electric Industries’ advanced ZQQ-8 sonar system, demonstrating the continuous technological advancement of the Taigei class.
