by Marcelo Moreira

The first panel of the Federal Supreme Court will begin, next Tuesday (13), the trial of the Criminal Action against the seven defendants of Nucleus 4, a group involved with the invasions of the STF on January 8, 2023.

According to the Attorney General’s Office’s indictment, they were responsible for spreading false news about the electoral system and attacking public institutions and authorities.

Among the defendants are Ailton Moraes Barros, former Army major; Ângelo Denicoli, reserve major; Giancarlo Rodrigues, Army warrant officer; Guilherme Almeida, Army lieutenant colonel; Reginaldo Abreu, Army colonel; Marcelo Araújo Bormevet, Federal Police agent; and Carlos Cesar Moretzsohn Rocha, president of Instituto Voto Legal. All are responsible for attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, attempted coup d’état, participation in an armed criminal organization, qualified damage and deterioration of listed property.

Two of them have already been heard: Marcelo Araújo and Ailton, via videoconference. The police officer is accused of creating false news about ministers Luiz Fux and Luís Roberto Barroso. The former Army major is accused of pressuring military authorities to give in to the coup. The defendants gave their statements on June 24, 2025.

The trial will be in person and will take place on four dates already reserved: October 14th, 15th, 16th and 21st. The analysis of the case is another step in the investigations into the undemocratic acts that occurred in the country.

This is the second group involved in the coup attempt to be analyzed by the First Panel of the STF. At the beginning of September, the same collegiate had already condemned former president Jair Bolsonaro and seven other members of the so-called Núcleo 1.
