The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, arrived this Monday (13) in Washington, in the United States, to continue attempts to negotiate the tariff and sanctions imposed on Brazilian authorities. The expectation is that a meeting between the chancellor and the Secretary of the US State Department, Marco Rubio, will take place by the end of this week.
Last Thursday (9), Marco Rubio spoke for 15 minutes with Mauro Vieira to formalize the dialogue between the governments and presidents of both countries. According to a note released by Itamaraty, the Secretary of State invited the Brazilian minister to a face-to-face meeting in the American capital to discuss priority issues in the relationship between Brazil and the United States.
Vieira embarked for the USA from Rome, Italy, where he accompanied President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on an agenda that included a meeting with Pope Leo XIV. He already met Rubio in person on July 30, also in Washington – the day the United States announced the application of the Magnitsky law against Federal Supreme Court (STF) minister Alexandre de Moraes.
The Brazilian foreign minister reportedly offered to go to Washington because Rubio cited a tumultuous schedule with the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. The meeting between them will serve as preparation for the meeting between presidents Lula and Donald Trump. The countries’ teams must prepare the text of the trade agreement that must be signed by the heads of state in Malaysia, on the 31st.
