Germany, through the defense conglomerate Rheinmetall, announced the supply of new Skyranger 35 air defense systems to Ukraine, mounted on the Leopard-1 chassis.

The contract is financed by an EU country using frozen assets of Russia, the value of which is estimated to be in the order of hundreds of millions of euros, and production and integration will take place in Italy, at Rheinmetall Italia SpA in Rome.

The Skyranger 35 combines the mobility of a proven tracked vehicle with a high-rate-of-fire gun system, capable of engaging low-flying threats such as drones, helicopters and enemy munitions. Equipped with the 35×228 mm caliber KDG 35/1000 cannon, the system can fire up to 1,000 rounds per minute and reaches a maximum distance of 4,000 meters. Furthermore, it uses AHEAD aerial munitions and can be adapted to modern guided missiles in the future.

According to Rheinmetall, the Leopard-1 Skyranger 35 maintains compatibility with gun systems already in use, offering a mobile platform that can track mechanized forces and operate in forward positions.

The operation represents an ongoing allied effort to create alternative financing channels to rapidly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense, underscoring Germany’s industrial commitment to Ukraine.
