Technoregion’s experiment aims to improve efficiency and reduce operating costs

Near Yeaskin the Krasnodar Kraiflight tests have begun for an experimental version of the legendary Antonov and-2now equipped with an engine derived from the Mi-8 helicopter.

The first flight of the prototype, designated TR-301/117took place on October 1, 2025 and lasted about 10 minutes, according to the Russian channel TAKE-OFF on Telegram.

Manufacturer Technoregion has been dedicated for years to modernizing and re-engining the An-2. In this new configuration, the engine used is the TV2-117normally installed on Mi-8T helicopters.

Conversion and performance

To adapt the engine to the aircraft, engineers converted it into a single-shaft turboprop. The free turbine was removed, and the gearbox was connected directly to the compressor.

After modification, the power output dropped from 1,500 to about 900 horsepower — a reduction of 40%. Nevertheless, Technoregion believes the new TR-301/117 will outperform the previous version equipped with the Czech M601 engine (720 hp).

The basic TR-301 model is a lightweight version of the An-2, lacking the lower wing and featuring tubular reinforcements on the upper wing. According to the Russian Federal Air Transport Agencynine of these aircraft already have airworthiness certificates, and 16 are officially registered.

History of experiments

Before selecting the TV2-117, Technoregion had tested various alternative powerplants, including the Czech M601the helicopter engine GTD-350the automotive Zmz-409and even diesel engines from Kamaz.

Now, the company views the use of the TV2-117 as the most promising solution to revitalize the An-2 fleet — an aircraft widely used in agricultural aviation, regional transport, and utility missions across Russia since the 1940s.
