Based in The Hague, the two courts have distinct and complementary roles. THE ICJ, created in 1945, resolves disputes between states and judges questions about borders and human rights. Already the ICC, founded in 2002, tries individuals for war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity — and has worked on cases involving Sudan, Congo and Venezuela.
