Dina Boluarte, president of Peru, is at the center of a scandal because of her luxurious watches Luis Iparraguirre/Peru Presidency/Handout via Reuters A group of opposition parliamentarians in Peru presented this Thursday (9) a new motion to remove President Dina Boluarte, considered one of the most unpopular leaders in the world. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp The proposal is the latest in a series of failed attempts and comes as the country prepares for elections scheduled for April next year. In the context there are also protests against the government and pension reform. The request seeks to remove Boluarte for “permanent moral incapacity” and was signed by at least 34 congressmen from different parties. To be debated, the motion must have the support of 52 parliamentarians in a plenary session of Congress. If approved, it will be discussed in a new session, in which it will be decided whether the process can move forward. “The only way for the country to move forward is with the impeachment of Dina Boluarte,” said congresswoman Susel Paredes in a publication on the X network, where she shared the document. “Several blocks agreed, and that’s why the motion was presented.” Boluarte took power in December 2022, after the dismissal and arrest of then-president Pedro Castillo, whose deputy he was, after he tried to dissolve Congress. Castillo’s departure triggered months of violent protests, particularly in Andean regions and indigenous communities. Human rights organizations accused Boluarte’s government of using excessive force to suppress the demonstrations. The president also faces allegations of illicit enrichment, involving undeclared assets. In July, she decided to double her salary. His approval varies between 2% and 4%. The document shared by Paredes cites “serious accusations of corruption”, including the scandal known as “Rolexgate” — an investigation that uncovered a collection of Boluarte’s luxury watches. Congress, with a conservative majority, has already rejected previous attempts to initiate the impeachment process. But, six months before the elections, more parliamentarians have shown support for the proposal. Peru has had six presidents since 2018, and four former presidents are currently in prison.
