The interception performed by Israel against the so -called flotilha Global Sumudwho tried to pierce the maritime blockade to the Gaza Strip, triggered violent protests in several European cities between Thursday (2) and Friday (3).
Protesters Pro-Palestina vandalized shops, restaurants, and blocked roads in countries such as Spain, Italy, France, Germany and Ireland. Among the more than 400 activists detained on the flotilla vessels by the Israeli forces was Swedish Greta Thunberg, the main face of the movement.
In Barcelona, Spain, protesters broke during the protests networks such as Starbucks, Burger King and Carrefour, accusing “complicity” companies with Israel. In Italy, students occupied universities in Rome and Milan, while unions called more than 100 demonstrations in support of the flotilla.
According to the Israeli army, the operation to intercept the flotilla boats ended without problems. Israeli authorities said the detained militants “are safe and healthy” and said the vessels did not exceed the waters controlled by Israel.
Israel classified the idealization of the flotilla as “provocation” and “political maneuver.” The activists carried small amounts of supplies and refused to dock to Israeli ports, where the material would be inspected and later sent to Gaza.
Political repercussion
Because of the interception of the flotilla, Colombia, led by Gustavo Petro, expelled the last four Israeli diplomats still in the country and suspended the free trade agreement in force since 2020.
In Europe, Spain and Belgium have called Israeli diplomatic representatives to demand explanations. Belgian Foreign Minister Maxime Prevot said that “the way they were addressed [os barcos] and the site, in international waters, are unacceptable. ”The Italian government has taken a distinct position: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni criticized the activists and stated that the action“ brings no benefit to the Palestinian people. ”She, however, promised commitment to repatriate the 40 Italian citizens who participated in the flotilla.
