The Rio de Janeiro Regional Electoral Court (TRE – RJ) plans to transfer electoral sections in areas of organized crime. The measure, which aims to ensure that the electorate can vote without pressures or intimidation, is part of a security strategy for the 2026 elections.
Last Friday (26), the Regional Electoral Corregedor, Judge Claudio de Mello Tavares, met with representative of the Intelligence Sector of Security Forces acting in the State to ensure a safe and free claim for organized crime interference. Also present were members of the Public Prosecution Service of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) and the Federal Regional Attorney.
“We have voters who vote for fear, such the influence and power of criminals in some areas of Rio. We will work to modify the voting places that face this reality, with the guidance that the voter does not vote more than 1.5 kilometers of his residence,” said Claudio de Mello Tavares.
The first front of discussions of the meeting was the change of voting places in areas controlled by criminals. The work will include the update of the mapping carried out for the 2024 municipal elections and the completion of changes that remained pending.
The second raised axis provides for the creation of cooperation mechanisms to expand the electoral justice access to information about candidates, allowing a time to prevent the registration of candidacies of people associated with organized crime. The performance aims to avoid the infiltration of criminals in the spheres of political power.
