The State of São Paulo recorded nine cases of methanol poisoning over a 25 -day period, which led the National Secretariat for Drug Policy and Asset Management from the Ministry of Justice and Public Security to disclose a warning.
According to the secretary, the cases occurred from the intake of adulterated alcohol. The occurrences were notified by the Campinas Information and Toxicological Assistance Center, a reference in toxicology in the state and responsible for serving several municipalities. The records were referred to the federal agency as they are considered “out of the standard for the short period of time and also to divert from cases to this day notified of methanol poisoning.”
Methanol is a liquid, colorless and flammable substance, widely used as solvent and in the manufacture of fuels, plastics, paints and medicines.
