Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Slovakia, visiting Berlin in January 2024 Nadja Wohlleben/Reuters Slovakia approved a constitutional amendment on Friday (26) that foresees the recognition of “only two genres: male and female, which are biologically determined”. The reform was harshly criticized by the opposition, which states that the change will harm the LGBTQ+ community in Slovakia. Leader of the largest Slovical opposition party, progressive Michal Simecka called the vote in the Parliament “shameful.” The nationalist premie Robert I was defended the amendment as the “best response to the collapse of Western societies, in which progressivism and liberalism were prioritized.” The amendment was approved by 90 favorable votes from the National Council, headquarters of the Legislature – the minimum necessary in a country that has 150 parliamentarians. But only seven members of the house voted for the rejection of the text. With this, Bratislava seeks to prioritize his own laws on gender policy rather than those of the European Union, which are more liberal – one of the most controversial points of the text is precisely what establishes the primacy of national law on community in matters of cultural identity, ethics, health and education. Restrictions on homosexual adoption The amendment approved on Friday also determines that only couples with formalized unions can adopt children. The measure practically makes it impossible to adopt homosexual couples, as a constitutional amendment of 2014 – also led by I stay – defines marriage as a union only between a man and a woman. The text also vetoes the practice of rental belly, whether altruistic or paid, and limits sex education in schools, which can only be taught by consenting the child’s legal tutor. Critics see precedent ‘dangerous’ according to Simecka, the amendment “will harm the people of Slovakia and put the place of Slovakia in the European Union in check and in their legal space.” Activists also criticized the amendment. “This is one of the most dangerous decisions ever made by the Slovak Parliament,” said the NGO Inakost, who defends the rights of LGBTQ+people. According to the group, the amendment “directly threatens our affiliation [da Eslováquia] to the EU, bringing us even closer to authoritarian Russia. “I have led one of the few EU governments that keep ties close to Kremlin. In recent years, Bratislava has become approached from Moscow and has moved away from Brussels. European Alliance of Social Democratic Parties.
