Federal Management Agents Donald Trump performed on Thursday (4) an operation against illegal immigration in a factory of the South Korean automaker Hyundai in Ellabell, Georgia.
According to CNN, it was the largest surveillance operation in a single place in the history of the Internal Security Investigations Sector (HSI)-other agencies participated in the action-and 475 people were arrested, most of South Koreans.
Steven Schrank, HSI agent, said all detainees are irregular in the United States because they entered the country illegally; for having exemptions from visa for tourism or business travel, a condition in which they could not work in the country; or because they have exceeded the period of validity of their visas.
The Federal Prosecutor’s Office for the southern district of Georgia reported that several people tried to escape and even plunged into a sewage lake next to the factory, which forced the agents to use a boat to remove them from the water.
A Hyundai spokesman stated that detainees were outsourced and not hired directly by the company.
“So far, what we know is that none of the detainees are a direct employee of Hyundai Motor Company. We prioritize the safety and well-being of all who work on site and we have all the laws and regulations wherever we will operate,” he said.
The US arrested more than 352,000 illegal immigrants in the first 200 days of the Trump administration, completed in August, and deported 324,000, which would equivalent to a 1,620 record, according to the DHS Department (DHS).
