Moraes asks Zanin to mark Bolsonaro trial and seven other defendants in the coup plot

by Marcelo Moreira

Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes requested on Thursday (14) that the president of the first class, Minister Cristiano Zanin, will mark the date of the trial of former President Jair Bolsonaro and seven other defendants accused of participating in the attempted coup after the 2022 elections.

“Considering the regular termination of the procedural instruction, the fulfillment of all complementary steps granted, as well as the submission of final allegations by the Attorney General’s Office and all defendants, I request days for the present trial of this criminal action,” said the minister’s order.

Moraes also stated that the process is ready for inclusion on the agenda and that the definition of the start date is necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the lawsuit. The minister also pointed out that the trial in question is only the defendants of the so -called “crucial core”, made up of Jair Bolsonaro, Alexandre Ramagem, Almir Garnier, Anderson Torres, Augusto Heleno, Mauro Cid, Paulo Sérgio Nogueira and Walter Braga Netto. This week, all presented their final allegations to the Supreme.

After Zanin set the date, the board will judge the defendants based on the allegations of the Attorney General’s Office and the defenses. The situation of each accused will be evaluated and the votes of the ministers of the first class will be presented. If the Supreme Court understands that there was no crime or that the group is not the plaintiff, the defendants will be acquitted and the process will be filed. Otherwise, the ministers have proposals for calculating the penalty for each defendant.
