Hugo Motta says there is no mood in the House to vote amnesty proposal

by Marcelo Moreira

The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), said on Thursday (14) that there is no political climate in the house to vote on a broad, general and unrestricted amnesty proposal. According to him, the measure, which is defended by opposition sectors, does not have sufficient support between parliamentarians.

Motta stated that there is no environment to amnesty all investigated, defendants and convicted, including those accused of planning violent acts. “I don’t see an environment inside the house, for example, to amnesty who planned to kill people,” he said.

The statement was given after the occupation of the House and Senate plenary sessions last week, when opposition deputies and senators tried to press the approval of a package of measures that included the amnesty. The action lasted about 33 hours and paralyzed the legislative work.

For the mayor, an alternative bill could be more likely to move forward, as long as it deals with the review of penalties for convicts with less participation in the acts. He argued that excessive penalties can be magazines, allowing progression to milder regimes.

A survey by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) points out that, of the more than 1,400 arrested for the acts, 141 remain detained and 44 meet house arrest. Motta stated that there is sensitivity regarding cases of people with secondary involvement who received severe punishments.

Despite the pressure of the opposition, the mayor reiterated that he does not intend to guide the amnesty at the moment. He stated that any decision will depend on meetings with party leaders, but that the priority of the house is in other matters, such as the government’s contingency plan for sectors affected by tariffs imposed by the United States.

Motta also commented on the riot in the House the previous week, which resulted in the notification of 14 parliamentarians. They have five days to present their defenses about the occupation of the Board of Directors.

At another point, the deputy criticized the stance of Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), who remains in the United States even after the end of his mandate license. Motta said he disagreed with the attitude of the parliamentarian, who defended US economic sanctions against Brazil, and stressed that personal interests should not overlap with the national interest.
