The vehicle used was Excalibur, first Extra Large Uncrewed Underwater Vehicle (XLUUV) British, 12 meters long, presented earlier this year after three years of development in the Cetus project. The operation, conducted more than 16,000 kilometers away, was considered a milestone in the interoperability of unmanned naval systems, allowing the equipment to be operated interchangeably among allied countries.

In addition to the remote control, the exercise was attended by Japan to improve underwater acoustic communications.

The 2025 edition of Maritime Big Play reinforced the focus on command and control operations at great distances and contested scenarios, bringing the marine closer to the use of robotic and autonomous technologies.
