Putin just wants a photo with Trump and doesn’t seek peace, he says

The EU Foreign Chief of Foreign Affairs (EU), Kaja Kallas, said on Tuesday (12), in an interview with the American station CNBCthat Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is “just pretending to negotiate” and wants to use the meeting with US President Donald Trump as “personal victory” without any real intention to end the war in Ukraine.

“He just wants to have a picture with President Trump,” said Kallas.

The meeting between Trump and Putin is scheduled to take place this Friday (15), in the American state of Alaska, the only one near Russia, and will not have the presence of either the EU or Ukraine, which were not invited to the negotiations.

In the interview, Kallas stressed that “for any agreement to be implemented, you must have Europe and Ukraine at the negotiation table.” According to her, Kiev’s absence shows that Kremlin “just wants to postpone the sanctions” imposed by the West.

“Otherwise, Ukraine would be sitting at that table. He just wants to postpone the sanctions, which is why he is playing this game,” he said.

The Ukrainian government fears at this time that an agreement is signed to its default in Alaska, with the risk of giving rise to Russia currently occupied by Russia. In turn, President Trump recently stated that during the meeting with Putin, the United States “will try to recover” part of the Ukrainian territory that is under Russian occupation, but has not ruled out the possibility of giving in regions taken by the Russians.

According to Trump, the meeting with Putin will serve to “see what he has in mind” and, if he considers the Russian proposal “a fair deal”, will present it “to the leaders of the European Union, NATO leaders and the president [Volodymyr] Zelensky “.
