China has officially put its fourth type 075 amphibian landing ship into use, called Hubei and identified with the number 34.

The launch took place in December 2023 in the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai, and the ship underwent a series of tests during 2024, including joint exercises with other Chinese vessels, indicating that it was already operational before the official announcement was made.

The type 075 ships are part of China’s strategy to strengthen its ocean fleet with advanced amphibious capacities. With a gross displacement of between 35,000 and 40,000 tons, a length of more than 230 meters and a width of 36 meters, these vessels can transport marines, military equipment and helicopters, making landing operations in distant regions possible. So far, China has put three other ships of this type, called Hainan, Guangxi and Anhui.

Despite its considerable size, the type 075 is smaller than the newest ship of Project 076, the Sichuan, which was launched at the end of 2024 and that is even larger and more powerful.

The progress in the construction of these ships reflects China’s strategic ambitions in Asia, in particular the expansion of the navy’s expedition operations and possible actions with regard to the Taiwank issue.
