Corinthians members approved the impeachment of Augusto Melo at an extraordinary general meeting held on Saturday (9), in Parque São Jorge. With 1,413 favorable votes (69.37% of the valid votes) and 620 opposites, the former leader definitely left the position of president. He had been away from the role since May 26, by decision of the Deliberative Council.
In a statement released after confirmation of the result, Augusto Melo said he will contest what he classified as “irregularities in the vote”, promising “taking appropriate measures for the appropriate ways”. In the statement, Melo claimed that the process was led by people involved in a campaign against him.
The president of the club’s deliberative council, Romeu Tuma Júnior, is expected to convene a new election, restricted to the participation of counselors as competitors and voters. The elected president will hold the position by the end of 2026, when the term of Augusto Melo would end.
Of the approximately 10,000 associates able to participate, 2037 attended the impeachment vote. According to the Electoral Commission, only over 18 years admitted more than five years ago and with monthly fees until June 10 had a voting right. The now former president and interim president Osmar Stabile were present at Corinthian headquarters.
Augusto Melo’s impeachment request was based on accusations of irregularities in the Sponsorship Agreement with the Getting House Vaidebet, a violation of the General Sport Law and disrespect to the team status. Last month, the former leader became a defendant after the court accepted the complaint filed by the prosecutor of São Paulo for the crimes of criminal association, money laundering and theft.
