A few days of meeting with US President Donald Trump, Alaska, Russia dictator Vladimir Putin called Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) to reinforce diplomatic articulation at BRICS.
According to Kremlin, Putin informed Lula about his recent meeting with the American special envoy for the Middle East, Steven Witkoff, centered on the Ukraine War. Lula reaffirmed that Brazil defends dialogue and is willing to contribute through the group of Friends of Peace, a joint initiative of Brazil and China. Trump and Putin will meet at Alaska (USA) next Friday (15).
The contact occurs at the same time when Lula talked to Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, and received an official demonstration from the Chinese government in support of Brazil against Trump’s tariff-a measure that mainly reaches Russia, Brazil and India, the main targets of American trade policy.
In addition to Ukraine, Lula and Putin discussed the expansion of bilateral strategic partnership and cooperation at BRICS, which also includes the founders of the China, India and South Africa. The approach is part of Moscow’s diplomatic offensive to circumvent western sanctions and preserve commercial bonds, while Brazil maintains strong dependence on russian imports of fertilizers and diesel.
