The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, assigned this Friday (8) to French President Emmanuel Macron, responsibility for the collapse of the negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas Group in the Gaza Strip.
In an interview with the American broadcaster EWTNRubio stated that Paris’s initiative to unilaterally recognize the State of Palestine, announced on July 24, changed Hamas’s willingness in the conversations mediated by Qatar, the United States and Egypt.
“The negotiations began to crumble the moment Macron made the announcement,” he said.
According to him, the French decision paved the way for other countries, such as the United Kingdom, to signal similar plans – in the British case, with a deadline for September and conditioned to a ceasefire. The secretary argues that this diplomatic movement convinced Hamas that it would be more advantageous to postpone any agreement.
The conversations, held in July in the capital of Qatar, sought to establish a 60 -day truce and the release of hostages, but ended without consensus. After the French announcement, the United Kingdom and Canada also indicated support for the recognition of the Palestinian state, citing the humanitarian crisis and widespread hunger in Gaza.
