Israel’s president, Isaac Herzog, said on Wednesday that the attack on Israel committed by the Palestinian terrorist group Hamas on October 7, 2023 invalidated the idea of two states as a solution to the Middle East dispute.
“First, October 7th was a turning point in the history of the region and was a great setback in Israeli thinking about the possibility of a two-state solution. Because you can have agreed on an internationally recognized border and one day a terrorist organization cross it and massacre, burn and hostage,” Herzog said in a visit to a press conference.
“The whole idea of a two -state solution is futile at this time, is contrary to all the notion of peace, will not help a single Palestinian, will further frustrate people and will be seen as a reward for terrorism,” he added.
Estonia’s president, Awar Karis, who accompanied Herzog at the press conference, said the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip is “catastrophic” and “deeply worrying” and that the price of combating terrorism cannot be the death of civilians.
Regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state, Karis pointed out that Estonia’s official position is to wait and work for a two -state solution, which, he said, will not happen overnight.
Herzog also denounced the threat that Iran represents to Israel and Europe, noting that two months ago Tehran bombed and severely damaged a Cancer Research Institute in Israel as part of the retaliation for Israel’s attack on the Iranian nuclear program.
In addition, the Israeli President reiterated his allegations that the UN is delaying the distribution of large volumes of humanitarian aid that Israel allowed to enter Gaza.
“The UN is delaying hundreds of trucks, almost 800 [com ajuda] That the UN could distribute, and is not distributing, ”he said.
Herzog also criticized the press for, according to him, distorts the role of Israel and publicizing what he called “false” accusations.
“Usually, they completely ignore the obvious responsibility of Hamas for the suffering of Gaza residents,” he argued.
