The earthquake took place on Wednesday (30), with epicenter about 130 km from the base. Tsunami waves were recorded in the open sea, but did not reach the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy, regional capital, which is in the same bay as the military base. The city had only light damage. Rybachiy’s base was built in the Soviet era, in a protected cove of the storms of the Pacific. According to The New York Times, new piares have been installed at the scene since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2022.
