US Senator reacts to demonstrations against Lula and Moraes

Senator Shane David Jett, Oklahoma State Representative, reacted to the organized demonstrations on Sunday (3), who gathered tens of thousands of Brazilians in different parts of the country to press the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) and the impeachment request of Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF).

In an X profile dedicated to commenting on the situation of Brazil, the American senator wrote: “August 3, Brazil on the streets. Jair Bolsonaro could not go, but the people were for him. The Brazilians demand the impeachment of Moraes [ministro do STF Alexandre de Moraes] and Lula [presidente Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva]. The former president did not participate in the acts because he had his freedom restricted by precautionary measures of the Supreme Court.

In February, Jett even sent a letter to the Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Paulo Gonet, charging measures on reports of human rights violations in the country.

In July, the American senator stated that Brazil is experiencing a “dark period”, criticizing mainly actions by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, saying that the magistrate behaves as a “modern despot and conducts a real witch hunt against conservative voices and any citizen who dare to disagree with the established regime.”

This Sunday’s acts took place in at least 20 capitals, with the largest audiences registered in cities such as Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Belém, Campo Grande and Porto Alegre.
