The Attorney General of the Union (AGU), the Federal Supreme Court (STF), the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) and President Lula decided, for now, not to resort to the sanction imposed by the United States to Minister Alexandre de Moraes. The decision was made during a dinner at the Palace of Alvorada, on Thursday night (31), amid the repercussion of the application of the Magntsky Law against the magistrate.
According to Band’s investigation, the joint assessment is that it is not the time to act in a hurry. Two main reasons underlie the caution: there is still no clarity on the concrete impacts of the sanction applied to Moraes, and the government and the Supreme Court rather meet with the presidents of the House and Senate, Hugo Motta and David Alcolumbre. The expectation is to build an institutional response with the digital of the three powers, through an AGU coordinated action.
The decision, therefore, is temporary. After meeting the heads of the Legislature and the definition of the joint strategy, the AGU should formally trigger US justice. The movement is being treated as an institutional reaction to the measure adopted by the US government under the presidency of Donald Trump.
Six STF ministers were present at the dinner, including Alexandre de Moraes, as well as the Attorney General, Paulo Gonet, the Union Lawyer, Jorge Messias, and the Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski. In the reopening of the judiciary this Friday (1st), the ministers Barroso, Moraes and Fux must speak publicly in defense of his colleague and the court.
