On November 10, the city of Belém, Pará will host the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP 30. The event is expected to bring together about 50,000 participants, which has pressured the local hotel chain and caused an increase in accommodation prices.
Despite the logistical and financial difficulties, the president of COP 30, André Corrêa do Lago, denied the possibility of changing headquarters. According to him, Belém has sufficient infrastructure to receive the expected audience, and the challenges are specifically concentrated on the issue of lodging.
“It is not a matter of number of accommodations or infrastructure. I believe that satisfactory answers will be given by the responsible sector that is dealing with this part,” he said.
The president also revealed that some countries have pressed him to transfer the conference to another place due to concerns about stay capacity. Leaders of two international blocks also expressed dissatisfaction.
To meet the demand, the Government of Pará has adopted several solutions. In addition to the existing hotel chain in the capital, Vila COP is being built, with capacity for 405 beds for delegates and leaders.
Other measures include hiring vessels for floating accommodation, adaptation of hostel schools and motels, stimulating season rental and partnerships with digital platforms.
The State Attorney General’s Office (PGE) stressed that the prices of accommodation in Belém are governed by private sector rules, based on free negotiation between the parties. However, the state government has dialogued with owners, real estate and enterprises to encourage responsible business practices during the event.
The COP 30 organization has ensured that more affordable hosting alternatives will be offered to participants.
