The United States Department of Defense is conducting drone tests in Alaska as part of an effort to boost innovation in electronic war and overcome regulatory and technological barriers.
The initiative, led by the Defense Innovation Unit (IUD), aims to offer companies, especially minors, real opportunities to test autonomous systems in hostile simulated environments. Projects such as GI and range attack group were created to accelerate the incorporation of new technologies into the Armed Forces and facilitate the testing process, often waged by federal aviation administration requirements (FAA) and operational limitations on military bases.

Initially, Ukraine was considered an ideal field of testing due to its practical experience in drone combat. However, logistics obstacles and diplomatic tensions prevented the US formal support for these operations. Still, some American startups with good financing have been able to test equipment on the Ukrainian front line. Without viable alternatives, Alaska was chosen as a domestic solution, offering more favorable conditions of airspace and less interference, as well as allowing more flexible tests.
During the exercises conducted by the 11th Special Operations Battalion, it was found that many of the US -used electronic war systems are obsolete, with more than two decades of use and ineffective against modern threats. Nevertheless, the team was able to improve their performance, especially in GNSS signal interference scenarios.
The advance, however, does not hide technological lag compared to powers such as China and Russia, which have invested more aggressively in accessible and effective solutions for the battlefield.
