Airbus Helicopters has started a new military helicopter flight test H160m Guépardwhich was developed specifically for the French Armed Forces. This aircraft is part of an integrated program that aims to equip the Army, Navy and Air Force with the same lightweight helicopter platform.

The French Armed Forces Ministry plans to order 169 unit H160M, which will replace five different types of helicopters that are currently operating or retired.

Based on the H160 Civil Model – which has been operating for more than three years – H160M has been extensively modified to meet military needs. Named Cheetah (“Cheetah” in French), this helicopter combines technological advances that place it among the most modern in its class in the world.

Development is accelerated with several prototypes

To speed up the certification and testing process, Airbus produces three H160M prototypes. The first prototype will be used for flight tests and weapons testing scheduled in 2026. The second prototype – which is currently in the final assembly stage – will be tested in extreme heat and cold conditions. The third prototype has not been released details.

“H160M is an aircraft that is ready for the future mission: reliable, nimble, very connected, and equipped with sensors and the latest generation of weapons. Most importantly, this aircraft can be developed and adjusted to the changing operational environment,” said CEO of Airbus Helicopters.

Advanced technology and integration with drones

Weighing 6 tons, H160M is driven by two Safran Arrano machines and has 68 patents that focus on operational efficiency, safety, and environmental sustainability. This helicopter is equipped with avionics Thales FlytX And the exclusive mission control system of Airbus, which provides extensive situational awareness crew during complex operations.

Sophisticated communication allows full integration in air, sea and land missions. This model is also the first airbus helicopter with a standard system for interactions with drones.

Among the installed sensors, there is an electro-optical system Euroflir 410 from Safran and Radar AirMaster C From Thales. This self -defense system covers the entire electromagnetic and optical spectrum, automatically identifying threats.

Modular and versatile weapons

Weapons system HFORCE Allows H160M to operate various types of weapons. This helicopter can be equipped with a 12.7 mm engine rifle in the pod, guided missile, and a 7.62 mm engine rifle mounted on the side holder or hinged rail for precision shots.

Delivery to France is scheduled to End of 2028. Airbus will also be responsible for the maintenance and operational support of the fleet during the first ten years of service.
