Reese Witherspoon is courting some controversy with her recent remarks about the rise of AI technology.
The 50-year-old Oscar winner uploaded a video to her Instagram on Wednesday (April 15) where she encouraged other women to begin looking into AI research and trying to, at least, “learn the basics.”
She said she was at a book club meeting recently where she asked 10 women if they used AI and only 3 out of that 10 said yes. Only 1 of the 3 said she felt confident using it.

“70% of the group is not keeping up,” Reese said, noting that the thing she has “learned about technology is that you if you don’t get a little bit of understanding, you can’t keep up.”
She then offered to share what she’s learning with her followers.
In the caption of her post, Reese wrote, “Well…I’ve decided it’s TIME. The AI revolution has begun, and I need to learn as much as I possibly can about AI and share it with all of you. Also, FYI: the jobs women hold are 3x more likely to be automated by AI, yet women are using AI at a rate 25% lower than men on average. We don’t want to be left behind. So…do you want to learn with me?”
She followed up in the comments section with: “Women need to be in these conversations.”
An Instagram user added a community note to her post to point out the dangers of AI, including the creation of deepfakes, the spread of misinformation, and its harmful impact on the environment.
Many of the comments on Reese‘s post disagreed with her take.
The Ten Thousand Doors of January author Alix E. Harrow commented, “personally, I’m extremely proud of 7 out of 10 women 💕”
“This is such a disappointing take (and I fear an undisclosed ad),” said another user.
Earlier this week, Diplo made similar comments about AI and how he believes creatives need to “adapt or just, like, give up.”
