Jon Alderman/US Naval Guard The United States Army had to destroy two C-130 cargo planes that malfunctioned during a high-risk rescue of a pilot carried out in Iran over the weekend. The information was revealed by US military sources to US newspapers and international news agencies. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp The aircraft were destroyed by US troops due to an unforeseen event during the rescue operation for the jet pilot: they developed a mechanical defect when they were about to leave Iranian territory. Troops are instructed to destroy the equipment they need to leave behind in missions of this type, so that the enemy does not take advantage of the pieces or try to copy the technology. The C-130 Hercules is one of the most used military aircraft in the world, and its unit cost is around US$30 million (around R$154.5 million) — more advanced models can cost up to US$75 million (R$386 million). Discover the model below: Manufacturer: Lockheed Martin (USA); Height: 11.7 m; Wingspan: 40.4 m; Length: 29.8 m; Maximum take-off weight: 75 tons; Maximum load: 21.8 tons; Maximum speed: 593 km/h; Expected range on the tank: 3,800 km; There are disagreements between the exact model of the plane destroyed in Iran. While US newspapers and the AP news agency speak of “C-130 planes”, the Reuters agency mentioned the “MH-130”, which is a small variation on the model. The data above is from the C-130 Hercules because it is the variant cited by the largest number of sources. Rescue of American pilot in Iran was dramatic The US Army currently has more than 350 C-130 aircraft, including all variants, between the Air Force, Coast Guard and Navy. These aircraft are spread around the world and their main purpose is to transport cargo and troops. The C-130 began to be developed in the 1950s, during the Korean War, and arose from the US Army’s need for an aircraft capable of transporting troops and cargo, operating in places with little infrastructure. Known for its resistance and versatility, the C-130 can operate on short, irregular runways or in extreme conditions. There are versions adapted for landing on snow and ice, used in regions such as Greenland and Antarctica. In total, more than 60 countries operate some version of the aircraft, developed in more than 70 different variants. In Brazil, the Brazilian Air Force used the C-130 Hércules between 1965 and 2024. The fleet was replaced by the KC-390 Millennium. C-130 aircraft have been involved in recent accidents around the world, which are still under investigation by the respective authorities. In March, an aircraft crashed in Colombia and killed at least 69 people. In February, another plane was involved in an accident in Bolivia that left 20 people dead.
