Emmanuel Macron speaking about the conflict in the Middle East. Reproduction/Social Media The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, stated this Thursday (2) that statements by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, about his marriage “are neither elegant nor have any place” given the time when Trump is promoting a war in the Middle East. ✅ Follow the g1 international news channel on WhatsApp Macron’s speech was made after Trump commented, on Wednesday (1st), on the Frenchman’s relationship with his wife, Brigitte Macron. The American said that the first lady treats the French president “extremely badly”. “I call France, Macron — whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from a punch in the jaw,” said the American president. The statement references a video released in 2025 that appeared to show Brigitte pushing Macron in the face. The episode generated repercussions at the time, but had no official developments. Context Video shows moment in which hand hits French president’s face The episode that Trump referred to in his speech occurred in May 2025, when the French president and the first lady disembarked from the French presidential plane in Hanoi, Vietnam. When the aircraft door opened, it was possible to see Macron having an argument with someone, without apparently realizing that the door had been opened. The arms of his wife, Brigitte, then appear in the images captured, and she puts both hands on her husband’s face and pushes him (see above). Afterwards, Macron appeared surprised to see the door open and then quickly turned around and waved to the press. The couple went down the stairs of the plane, and the president extended his arm to his wife, as is his custom, but she did not accept it. The video, which quickly went viral, provoked an avalanche of comments on social media. After the strong repercussion of the case, the French president spoke out and said it was just a “joke”. “I was arguing, or rather joking, with my wife,” Macron told reporters in Hanoi. “It’s nothing.” An aide to the president described the incident as a harmless couple’s “fight.” Another member of Macron’s circle downplayed the incident to the AFP news agency: “It was a moment when the president and his wife were relaxing before the start of the trip, they were joking,” said the source, who requested anonymity. “It’s a moment of complicity,” he added.
