With the US certification, Sweden’s Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) can now offer its conversion of the Saab 2000 to a freighter in the US market, strengthening the role of the turboprop in regional logistics and express shipments.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified the program of the Swedish Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) to convert the Saab 2000 from a passenger aircraft to a cargo aircraft.

The approval marks an important step for the project, which had already received a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) from EASA at the end of 2025 and is now formally gaining access to the US market.

The modification, developed in collaboration with Jetstream Aviation Capital, the program’s launch customer, positions the Saab 2000 as a high-performance option for regional logistics, e-commerce and time-critical cargo operations. According to the companies, the converted aircraft delivers greater capacity and sector speeds up to 30% higher than the Saab 340 freight version, increasing the operational range and productivity of the fleet.

Major changes include a reinforced carbon fiber floor, an integrated loading roller system and a cargo area with a total volume of 55.4 cubic meters.

The maximum structural payload capacity for the conversion is 6,622 kg, although when operating under US Part 135 regulations the payload is limited to 3,402 kg.

TAM started the Saab 2000 cargo program in 2022 and the prototype’s first flight took place on March 6, 2023 in Örebro, Sweden.

At the time, the company presented the initiative as a natural evolution of its experience with the Saab 340F, a conversion that had been offered on the market for several years.

With the FAA certification in hand, the project is gaining momentum, just as the first Saab 2000 delivered to the American operator Sterling is entering the American market.

The delivery, announced by TAM and Empterwik, was presented as a milestone to expand the presence of the Saab 2000 platform in North America, with new commercial opportunities in the regional freight segment.
