The US certification will allow Swedish company Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) to offer a converted Saab 2000 cargo aircraft to the US market, strengthening the position of turboprop aircraft in regional logistics and express operations.

U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has certified a program for Sweden’s Täby Air Maintenance (TAM) to convert the Saab 2000 from a passenger aircraft to a cargo aircraft.

With this approval, the project has reached an important turning point, and after already receiving the Supplementary Type Certification (STC) from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) at the end of 2025, it can now officially enter the US market.

Developed in collaboration with Jetstream Aviation Capital, this modification positions the Saab 2000 as a high-performance option for regional logistics, e-commerce and emergency cargo transportation. According to the company, the modified airframe offers up to 30 percent faster sector speeds and greater payload capacity than the Saab 340 freighter, improving operational range and fleet productivity.

Key changes include a carbon fiber reinforced floor, an integrated roller loading system and a cargo compartment with a total volume of 55.4 cubic meters.

The maximum structural payload capacity is presented as 6,622 kg, but the effective payload is limited to 3,402 kg when operating under US Part 135 regulations.

TAM began its Saab 2000 cargo aircraft program in 2022, with the prototype’s first flight taking place in Örebro, Sweden, on March 6, 2023.

At the time, the company described the project as a natural progression of the experience gained from the Saab 340F conversion program, which model had already been available on the market for several years.

With FAA certification secured, the project has gained momentum at a time when the first Saab 2000 has been delivered to US operator Sterling and is beginning to establish itself in the market.

This delivery, announced by TAM and Empterwik, is considered an important milestone for the expansion of the Saab 2000 platform into the North American market and is expected to open up new commercial opportunities in regional freight transport.
