The United States Treasury Department announced this Thursday (26) that future dollar bills will now display President Donald Trump’s signature. The measure, according to the ministry, is part of the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of US independence, and marks the first time that a sitting president will have his name on banknotes in circulation.
The new notes will also bear the signature of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Until now, the US dollar standard provided for two signatures – that of the secretary and that of the treasurer – a practice that has been maintained since the 19th century. With the announced change, the treasurer’s signature will be removed and replaced by that of President Trump, ending a continuous tradition since 1861. The first notes with the new model are expected to be US$100, with printing scheduled to begin in June and gradual circulation in the following months.
In a statement, Secretary Bessent stated that “there is no more powerful way to recognize the historic achievements of the country and President Donald Trump than dollar bills bearing his name.”
The current US Treasurer, Brandon Beach, defended the initiative, saying that the American currency will continue to be a symbol of “prosperity, strength and the unwavering spirit of the American people under the leadership of President Trump”.
The design of the ballots will not be changed other than replacing the signature. American legislation requires that only deceased historical figures can appear in banknote portraits, which maintains the dollar’s main visual identity unchanged.
