A demonstration involving the AH-64E helicopter and the Altius 700 launched effect reinforces the U.S. strategy of expanding tactical reach, reconnaissance and electronic warfare through solutions integrated into the existing fleet.

The United States Army has carried out a test marking another step in its combat aviation modernization agenda. On February 26, an AH-64E Apache helicopter successfully launched an A700 unmanned system in an experimental demonstration that highlighted the force’s ability to rapidly integrate new operational capabilities into platforms already in service.

According to the Army, the project was developed in less than six months, from the definition of the requirement to the practical demonstration of the solution. The initiative began in late summer 2025 with the goal of enabling the use of Launched Effects — a family of launchable unmanned systems — from the Apache, providing an accelerated response to an emerging operational demand.

The effort gained additional relevance because it was carried out despite administrative obstacles, including the 43-day shutdown of the United States government during the development, fabrication and installation phases. Even so, the team involved managed to deliver a functional solution by the end of February.

The integration was made possible through coordination among different U.S. Army structures and industry partners. Teams from the U.S. Army Transformation and Training Command, Futures and Concepts Command, U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command, Capability Program Executive Aviation, and partner companies under the Portfolio Acquisition Executive Maneuver Air structure took part in the project.

In the official assessment, the introduction of Launched Effects into Army Aviation platforms could have a direct impact on tactical combat capability. The concept was designed to reduce gaps in reconnaissance and surveillance, while also extending the reach of kinetic capabilities, electronic warfare, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions.
