Argentina classifies Jalisco New Generation Cartel as terrorist

The Argentine government has declared the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), from Mexico, a terrorist organization, according to a statement released this Thursday (26) by President Javier Milei’s press secretary.

“The Presidency of the Republic informs that the National Government has declared the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) a terrorist organization,” says the statement.

The Argentine government ordered the inclusion of the CJNG in the Public Registry of People and Entities Linked to Acts of Terrorism and their Financing (RePET), linked to the Ministry of Justice, “as part of the international commitments assumed by the Argentine Republic in combating terrorism and its financing”, states the statement.

Registration with RePET enables the application of financial sanctions and operational restrictions designed to limit the capacity of these criminal organizations and their members, in addition to protecting the Argentine financial system from their use for illicit purposes.

Furthermore, it strengthens international cooperation in security and justice, in close coordination with countries that have already designated the cartel as a terrorist organization.

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is a Mexican organized criminal group dedicated to drug and weapons trafficking. The organization was created as an armed wing of the Sinaloa Cartel, under the name Los Mata Zetas (The Zetas), and emerged from divisions between several drug trafficking structures following the death, in 2010, of Ignacio Coronel, aka Nacho Coronel, one of the leaders of the powerful Sinaloa Cartel (CDS).

The organization’s founder and leader, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, died on February 22 during an operation in Tapalpa, 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco.

The drug trafficker was one of the most wanted criminals by Mexican and American authorities, with a multimillion-dollar reward offered for information leading to his capture.
