Trump says Maduro will be the target of new prosecutions in the US

US President Donald Trump said before a cabinet meeting at the White House this Thursday (26) that former dictator Nicolás Maduro should face new prosecutions in the US amid his current drug trafficking trial.

The former Chavista leader and his wife, Cilia Flores, face their second hearing in the Court of the Southern District of New York this early afternoon. The two arrived at court around 5 am Brasília time and Judge Alvin Hellerstein began the session.

Trump praised the dictator’s capture on January 3, describing it as “a major military operation.” Maduro was transferred from Caracas to New York, where he faces four serious criminal charges: three counts of conspiracy to commit narco-terrorism, importation of cocaine and possession of machine guns and explosive devices; and a fourth count of possession of these weapons.

At the White House, the Republican leader argued that there will be other trials against the Venezuelan, “because they prosecuted him for a fraction of the things he did.” The American president said that Maduro “killed a lot of people” and “emptied his prisons in our country.”

The United Socialist Party of Venezuela, of which Maduro is a member, organized a demonstration in Bolívar Square, in Caracas, this Thursday, in protest of the deposed dictator’s trial.
