Britain has stepped up its military presence in the Middle East following an escalation in attacks believed to have been carried out by Iran, which has reportedly already launched more than 3,500 missiles and drones against targets in 12 countries.
According to Defense Secretary John Healey, the build-up includes aircraft, air defense systems and naval assets and is focused on protecting British citizens, bases and allies.
According to the British government, an increase in tensions was expected and Typhoon and F-35 Fighter planes, specialized personnel, radar and air defense systems were pre-positioned. As the conflict intensified, additional reinforcements were brought in, including the destroyer HMS Dragon, which was integrated into Eastern Mediterranean air defense operations.
British troops have already carried out around 900 hours of defense missions in strategic areas such as Cyprus, Jordan and the Gulf region. The UK has also set up a task force to expand cooperation with allies and accelerate the supply of military systems to Gulf countries such as Bahrain and Kuwait.
Beyond airspace, concerns about maritime safety are growing, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has come under criticism for threatening shipping. In response, the UK is strengthening its naval and surveillance capabilities, while maintaining commitments on other fronts, including support for NATO and Ukraine.
