The universal armored engineering vehicle UBIM, developed and produced by the Uralvagonzavod group (UVZ), which is part of the Russian state concern Rostec, has been officially put into service by the engineering troops of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, according to a notice published on Wednesday, March 26.
According to Rostec, the UBIM is designed to expand the operational capabilities of engineering units by bringing together functions on one platform that would normally be performed by different types of special vehicles. The company states that the model combines characteristics of an armored repair and recovery vehicle (BREM), an engineer obstacle clearance vehicle (IMR) and an armored mine clearance vehicle (BMR).
The state group states that the new equipment can be used in various scenarios on the battlefield, including evacuating damaged heavy vehicles, removing obstacles and opening passages through mined areas to support troop advance.
In a statement, Bekhan Ozdoyev, industrial director of Rostec’s weapons cluster, said the introduction of UBIM reflects the Russian military’s need for engineering vehicles with greater mobility, protection and versatility. He also highlighted that Uralvagonzavod has recently delivered other engineering assets to the Russian Ministry of Defense, including mine clearance vehicles and armored repair and recovery vehicles of the type BREM-80.
UBIM is developed on the basis of T-90M Proryvone of the most modern armored platforms currently in service in Russia. According to the published information, the vehicle is equipped with an engine of 1,130 horsepower, which ensures high mobility in various types of terrain.
The vehicle’s crew consists of five military personnel: a commander, a driver and three sappers responsible for engineering and demining operations.
Rostec states that the UBIM is expected to strengthen the role of the Russian engineer troops in missions that require technical support, armored mobility and the ability to operate in combat conditions.
