What is known about Trump’s proposal (and Iran’s demands)

by Syndicated News

The United States press reported this Tuesday (24) that the Donald Trump administration presented a 15-point proposal to Iran to achieve a ceasefire in the American and Israeli war against the Islamic regime, which began on February 28.

This Wednesday (25), two Pakistani government officials confirmed to the Associated Press that Iran received the proposal, despite Tehran’s denials that it is negotiating with the Americans.

Without confirmation for now from Washington, the two Pakistani officials (who spoke to the AP on condition that their names not be disclosed) reported some points of the proposal.

Among them would be the relief of American sanctions against Iran, civil nuclear cooperation between the two countries, the reduction of the Iranian nuclear program, monitoring by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), limits on the Iranian missile program and the total release of ship access to the Strait of Hormuz.

Around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) passes through this passage, almost completely closed by Iran after the start of the conflict with the USA and Israel.

Also speaking to the AP, an Egyptian government official described Trump’s proposal as “a comprehensive agreement” and stated that, in addition to access to Hormuz and restrictions on Iran’s missile program, points mentioned by the Pakistanis, Washington also demands an end to the sending of weapons to terrorist groups that are Tehran’s partners, such as Hamas and Hezbollah.

Negotiations are expected to be difficult, since, according to a report published by The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, the Iranian regime’s demands to end the war are very far from the American proposal.

According to the WSJ investigation, Tehran is demanding the closure of all American military bases in the Persian Gulf, reparations for attacks on Iran and new regulations for the Strait of Hormuz, which would allow the Iranians to charge fees to ships transiting through the passage, along the lines of what Egypt currently does in the Suez Canal.

Other points demanded by the regime would be guarantees that the war would not resume, the end of Israeli attacks against Hezbollah, the suspension of all sanctions against Iran and permission for Tehran to maintain its missile program, without negotiations to limit it.

A Trump administration official said the Iranian demands are “ridiculous and unrealistic,” indicating that the impasse is far from resolved.
