REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque The United States is expected to send thousands of new troops to the Middle East, according to two sources told Reuters this Tuesday (24). The measure expands military reinforcement in the region, even with Donald Trump’s government saying it is seeking negotiations with Iran. According to the sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the troops are from the 82nd Airborne Division, an elite unit based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. They did not inform the destination or shipping date. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, did not specify where in the Middle East the troops would be sent or when they would arrive in the region. One of the sources told Reuters that no decision has yet been made on sending troops to Iran itself, but that they will reinforce capacity for possible future operations in the region. When contacted, the US Armed Forces forwarded the request to the White House, which did not respond until the last update of this report. Isarel and Iran launch intense airstrikes The deployment of these soldiers would be in addition to last week’s deployment of thousands of Marines and sailors aboard the USS Boxer, an amphibious assault ship, accompanied by its expeditionary unit and other support ships. The planned deployments come just a day after President Donald Trump pushed back on threats to bomb Iranian power plants, saying there had been “productive” talks with Iran. Iran denied that any talks had taken place.
